JAY COBLE is associate professor of trumpet in the School of Music at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He earned a doctorate (DMA) from the University of Southern California, his master’s degree from Indiana University, and received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University. His teachers and main influences have been William Adam, Joe Phelps, Roy Poper, and Boyde Hood. Dr. Coble comes to the University of South Florida from Northern State University, where he taught from 1993 to 1998. Prior to that, he was a freelance trumpet artist in the Los Angeles area recording for television shows, movies, commercials, and CDs.

He has toured North America with the Buddy Rich Band and worldwide with the singer Tom Jones. Dr. Coble has a very diverse background and has experience playing in a wide range of styles. Since coming to the University of South Florida, Dr. Coble has been musically active in the Tampa Bay area, performing in shows, recitals, and appearances with the Florida Orchestra and the Florida West Coast Symphony. He has recorded with jazz professor Chuck Owen’s Jazz Surge and with jazz professor Jack Wilkins. He has been featured soloist with all major ensembles at USF. Dr. Coble has been invited on several occasions to go to The People’s Republic of China to teach and perform at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Conservatory of Music in Xi’An, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Shenyang Conservatory of Music.

He enjoys performing new music, and has premiered works for the Tampa Bay Composers Symposium and the internationally acclaimed Bonk Festival. Dr. Coble and USF trombone professor Tom Brantley have released a CD named “Confluences” which is music written or arranged for the trumpet and trombone. A second CD is currently being recorded. Dr. Coble was also recently invited to play a solo recital at the 38th International Festival of Choral Song and Music in Międzyzdroje, Poland. Other performances in Poland include the 38th International Organ and Chamber Music Festival in Kamień Pomorski, and an appearance with the international choral group In Terra Pax. A 2008 invitation took Dr. Coble to Eisenstadt, Austria where he was principal trumpet in the Classical Music Festival Orchestra, performing at the Esterhazy Palace. He also performed the Hummel Trumpet Concerto at the Festival. He has also been active across the United States performing and presenting master classes. He has been an adjudicator for the International Trumpet Guild, the National Trumpet Competition, and the Ellsworth Smith Trumpet Competition. Dr. Coble is a Yamaha performing artist.
