Born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Raised in Creston, Iowa, where he started on the trumpet in the fifth grade. Later switched to baritone, and then to tuba. When he was in the seventh grade, his family moved to Florida.

He majored in Rock at the University of Florida, receiving BS and MST degrees in geology. While at the University he played in the Gator Marching and Symphonic Bands. He also studied large bores and loud sounds as a student at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He completed the Officer Basic Course (OCS) in 1967, and the Officers Advanced Course in 1978.

He is currently employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in St. Petersburg as a contract representative and training specialist.

Besides his interest in music he is also an enthusiastic amateur astronomer. He is a member of the St. Petersburg Astronomy Club.

In addition to the Tampa Bay Symphony, he is currently a member of the Sunshine Brass Band, a British-style brass band based in Tampa.
